Weeks 7 and 8...Sinai, Covenants, and Laws

Hello! I chose to combine last week and this week because a) I was in Kodiak with my swim team, and b) these topics are so similar, that it would be easier to combine everything.  So... here we go!

We left off with the Israelites when they just got to Mount Sinai.  When they got there, God almost immediately called Moses up to the mountain.  He gave instructions to Moses on how to get the people ready to consecrate themselves to Him.  The Israelites ended up doing everything they were told, but they wanted Moses to intercede for them... thus meaning they didn't want a direct relationship with God.  Therefore, Moses went up for forty days and brought back down the Ten Commandments.  When Moses got down, he saw that the people had made a golden calf and were worshipping the idol and doing all sorts of wicked things.  Moses got so angry that he broke the two tablets and eventually had to make new ones.  A lesson anyone can learn from this is to be patient with God, because He isn't going to do everything according to our plan.  We need to trust him.

Exodus ends with detailed instructions on how to build the Tabernacle, and how everything was to be done as far as worshipping Him.  Leviticus then picks up with this idea and has laws for the priests, and many other laws for the nation of Israel.  Every type of law you could imagine is talked about in either Exodus or Leviticus.  However, an important truth vital to our understanding of Scripture is the repeated phrase in Leviticus..."You shall be holy, for I am holy." We tend to run through Leviticus or not even read it, because it seems so odd and weird.  Paul writes that, "All scripture is given by the inspiration of God, and is profitable for teaching and reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness."-1 Ti 3:16
